The Coach & Horses is a lovely, traditional pub in the heart of Bradfield Green, near Crewe. They provide a place for people to have a quiet drink, a place to eat and a place to share great times with friends.Angela Uren, licensee of The Coach & Horses has introduced several innovative and creative sustainable initiatives in order to help the pub move towards more sustainable operation.
Angela began by removing all fridges and freezers from the cellar at the pub, along with placing draft seals and self-closing on all doors. This has helped them minimise their waste and ensure that nothing stored in either of the two appliances is able to go off accidentally.
Timers have also been placed on all appliances possible within the pub. As a result of this, equipment is switched off automatically, further minimising the risk of human error and ensuring waste reduction is maximised within another area.
Angela and the team at The Coach & Horses also attempt to source their produce as locally as possible, and it does not come closer than the vegetable garden. It is here where as much produce as possible is grown for the kitchen, making their food menus the most sustainable they can.
Also located in the garden is a drain that collects rainwater. This water is then stored in two containers and saved until the summer, where it is then re-used to water the plants.
Waste oil is another element of sustainability that is important to Angela, with any wastage from the kitchen collected and recycled. Neighbours and customers are also encouraged to bring their own waste oil for recycling, further promoting best-practice both in and out of the pub.
We are extremely proud of the effort that Angela and the team have undertaken to make this pub a sustainability hub within the local community. They have reduced their energy bill by over £500 a month, demonstrating what can be achieved with a clear direction and alignment of views.
