Molson Coors Beverage Company have been working hard to make sure they keep sustainability at the heart of their business. In 2021 they become the first major UK brewer to produce brands using 100% renewable electricity through a Purchase Power Agreement.“For Molson Coors, making great beverages goes hand in hand with being good stewards of the planet. We take a grain to glass approach to environmental stewardship – from working with our barley growers to developing more sustainable packaging.”
In an average year, Molson Coors use the same amount of electricity as roughly 25,000 UK households, to brew over 1 billion pints, all with 100% renewable energy.
As for waste control, they made the decision back in 2020 to remove their plastic wrap, moving to 100% cardboard packaging, and in 2021 their plastic rings were replaced with carboard sleeves that are fully recyclable and made from wood fibers from certified sources. “These changes mean, since 2019, we have removed around 800 tonnes of single use plastic from our UK operations.” Any water wastage at their Tadcaster Brewery and Aspall Cyder sites is cleaned and discharged back into local rivers via wastewater treatment plants.
“We call our Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy ‘Our Imprint’ – so called because we believe that every time one of the drinks we make is picked up, an imprint is left behind and we want that imprint to be a positive one.”
Their goals and initiatives are company-wide, and every site is required to follow suit – focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving water use efficiency and supporting the circular economy through improving their packaging materials, and sending zero waste to landfill. For the future, Molson Coors aims for continual improvement on their sustainability journey, and have committed to reach net zero as a global organisation by 2050, with their UK sites reaching this goal by 2035.
Molson Coors’ commitment to sustainability today and for the future is fantastic to see, and we’re delighted to award them with the Company Edition of the BII Sustainability Champion Award.
