The Ring O ‘Bells is a family run pub that can be found in the Somerset village of Ashcott. When taking over the place, Jon Frost’s first job was to replace all the lamps and tubes with LED lighting to reduce energy consumption. They also installed smart thermostats and equipment timers to cut down on energy usage. With an in-house electrician, monitoring their energy consumption has become a lot easier, so they can adjust supplies accordingly.Waste reduction programs have been implemented across the pub, via detailed recycling systems, water usage reduction methods such as, low-flow toilets and sensor taps, and composting food waste. Any left-over food goes to a community food bank set up in the Ring O ‘Bells car park, allowing anyone in the village to take what they need. The community food bank also takes contributions from local farmers and companies that find they have excess food.
All staff members live within a 5-minute walk of the pub, and so are encouraged to walk to work for their personal health and for the environment. Within the car park, there are some electric car charging stations for customers, and in the pub there is a free water re-fill station for re-useable bottles.
The team at The Ring O ‘Bells are nowhere near stopping. They are currently looking into installing solar panels, as well as researching air/ground source heating for the establishment. Jon Frost is all about sustainability, not just by sourcing local and sustainable products for the pub, but outside the pub as well. Jon will offer shopping trips for his staff when he’s in town to cut down on fuel and emissions, as well as getting involved in helping local festivals such as Shambala, which has a heavy focus on sustainability. We are delighted to award The Ring O ‘Bells with our Sustainability Champion Award.
