Set in the outskirts of Winchester, The Bell Inn boasts a warm and friendly atmosphere with an open log fire.Licensee Sam Smith, has recently introduced a number of sustainable initiatives in order to drive the pub towards a sustainable future.
General self-awareness and imparting knowledge onto staff members have been two key factors in getting The Bell Inn to where they are today. As a self-labelled marginal business, it is important to ensure that the pub is as efficient and sustainable as possible.
The Bell Inn previously had a number of incandescent lights in place around the pub, but these have now been replaced by LED bulbs which have improved the efficiency of the venue by up to 85%.
Smart thermostats have also been installed to further help reduce energy; timers and sensors have been installed on all equipment to ensure that nothing is on when it doesn’t need to be.
Customer and team engagement are of paramount importance to Sam, and he is keen to educate both customers and staff about sustainable practices and the importance of reducing their carbon footprint.
Furthermore, when quizzed on this matter, Sam is keen to emphasise the part that his venue can play in driving change locally:
“We are the focal point of our small community and the surrounding area so taking the lead on creating a sustainable future is very important. Given the demographic of our core customer base, this will be expected. We strive to save energy and be as efficient and sustainable wherever possible. This has become a permanent fixture within our business now.”
We are delighted to add The Bell Inn as a BII Sustainability Champion, joining a number of other Greene King pubs located in a similar area.
