The Broad Face is located in the historic, rural market town of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The venue can be described as a stylish gastropub serving a British and Mediterranean menu, with real ales and a beer garden.
The licensee, Joshua Khan, has been undertaking some hard work to move the pub towards a sustainable future, with The Broad Face being the second pub operating under his stewardship, alongside The King Charles Tavern, to be recognised as a BII Sustainability Champion.
Joshua began by swapping out the previously used, less-efficient, incandescent and fluorescent lightbulbs for the newer and more-efficient LEDs. This has enabled the energy consumed via lighting to be reduced by up to 85%.
When it comes to waste reduction measures, Joshua and the team have changed their menus with waste reduction in mind. With this, customers are asked to clarify whether they would like items such as side salads, to ensure that they will be only served items that they are sure they will eat. As a result, the amount of food going in the bin has been reduced and the amount of stock consumed has slowed down.
Another key change that Joshua has made is introducing a smart dispense in the cellar to offset costs and save on line cleaning, while weekly meetings with his team reviewing the pub’s menus have enabled all at the pub to stay on top of all things sustainability.
We are delighted to recognise Joshua and all involved at The Broad Face with BII Sustainability Champion status and look forward to seeing their outstanding work continue.
