The family at the Brown Jug have replaced all their old lighting with LED bulbs. They have also invested in energy-efficient appliances to cut down costs and reduce their energy consumption. By using monitoring technology, the team can actively manage their energy usage and see where they can cut down a lot easier. They have also installed a new water efficient glasswasher system, to reduce their water wastage.
All waste produced at the pub is separated into different recycling bins, and any excess food from the day is donated to local food banks. Single-use plastic has been reduced where possible, and instead replaced with recyclable materials. The menu has also been adapted in The Brown Jug’s sustainability journey, with an increase in plant-based meal items to reduce their carbon footprint from meat production and implementing opt out options for customers to reduce food wastage, such as side salads or peas.
The Brown Jug makes sure the produce coming through their door is either sourced locally and/or from a sustainable-focus brand. Alongside this, they grow their own produce where they can in order to cut down their food miles and carbon footprint.
The team at The Brown Jug are all encouraged to adopt sustainable behaviours both inside and outside the pub, with sustainability being mentioned in all staff meeting. The Brown Jug team have checklists to adhere to at the start and end of each shift, reminding them to follow sustainability procedures, and if it’s possible, team members are encouraged to walk/cycle to work.
Sustainability is extremely important to this family run pub and we’re delighted to recognise them for their green actions.
