The Bull Inn & Albatross Apartments, located in the charming market town of Totnes, Devon, is a values-driven business with a priority focus on sustainability. Geetie Singh-Watson, owner of The Bull and Albatross, opened the first certified organic pub in the world back in 1998, and since then Geetie has opened more organic pubs with a “conscious compromise”, making The Bull her 4th sustainably driven business.“We are 100% committed to keeping our environmental footprint to a minimum to help us put “the Conscious Compromise” and No-Bull Rules into action.” At The Bull Inn you’ll find the unique “9 No-Bull Rules to Trade by” covering everything from choosing green energy suppliers such as Ecotricity to questioning everything from traders on their values.
Within the premises, The Bull Inn have only used 100% green energy from Ecotricity. They actively try not to use resources where possible, monitoring their own usage and asking guests to reduce their energy wastage too. The Albatross Apartments receive hot water from solar tubes on the roof that heat a portion of their water, while their green supplied gas heats the rest.
Within the kitchen, a new heat recovery system has been installed so that heat generated by the stoves is reused to heat water downstairs. Any waste from the pub is separated into general, mixed, glass, cardboard, food, and oil. With the help of Binit, waste is also separated into large cardboard, small paper and card, clean tin/metal and clean plastic.
The Bull Inn also has a “Your Help Yourself” approach – to stop good items being thrown out, any reusable items are given away to customers for free, whether its crates, pallets, boxes or furniture, anyone can take it home.
Most of the pub food is grown on their own farm, The Baddaford Farm Collective, cutting down their carbon footprint. They also have built areas to increase biodiversity in their gardens. All their aprons are made of vintage linen sheet from France, dyed with veg dye from their farm and sewn by locals in Totnes, making the process a community collective.
Finally, The Bull Inn teach and train their staff constantly with briefings every day, long handovers and team meetings with training values and ethics. Everything that The Bull Inn is about is in a comprehensive handbook.
