The Crown in Saltford is situated perfectly in between Bristol and Bath. An old coaching inn, this pub has recently undergone a spectacular refurbishment. They have a very exciting Gin and Whiskey Bar with over 30 different gins and 40 different whiskeys, along with a great selection of real ales and lagers. As part of the refurbishment, the licensee at The Crown, Carl Say, has overseen a number of changes to the pub in a drive to turn it into a sustainability hub within the local community.
Carl began replacing the previously used, less efficient incandescent lightbulbs with the modern, newly fitted LEDs. This has enabled him to reduce his energy expenditure on lighting by up to 85 %, reducing his costs in the process.
Furthermore, Carl and the team have also implemented various recycling programs and have begun to compost their food waste. As a result of this, the waste from the pub is minimised and much less goes to landfill. All staff have monthly meetings to review wastage and adjust their procedures accordingly, meaning they are constantly on top of all facts and figures.
The importance of waste reduction to Carl can’t be understated. He has installed a beertech line cleaning system to further reduce wastage in other areas and labels this as his proudest achievement when it comes to the changes he’s made to The Crown.
Ultimately, Carl and the team see it as vital to lead on a sustainable future in the local community and are looking at introducing even more energy and cost saving measures in the future. These include a Caterquick oil filtration system to reduce oil wastage in the kitchen.
We are delighted to award Carl and everyone at The Crown with BII Sustainability Champion status.
