The Gate Hangs Well

The Gate Hangs Well is a sustainability champion because they have shown commitment to running a sustainable business. They have shown that they are actively involved in energy reduction, waste reduction, sustainable procurement, as well as pushing for customer and team engagement to being sustainable.

The Gate Hangs Well located in Syston, is run by BII Ambassador Cassie Davison. The pub offers homemade pub classics, quality cocktails and a beautiful country garden where nature thrives.
As an old pub, there are many challenges to face when making a business sustainable. The Gate Hangs Well has invested in improving and upgrading their technology and systems to more eco-friendly and cost-efficient products. All lights have been replaced with LED bulbs and timers have been installed to cut down consumption.
Recycling programs have been implemented across the board, making sure to separate materials and reduce their single-use plastics. Any left-over produce is then implemented into the menus, which are changed on the fly to accommodate reducing food wastage.
Food miles have been cut down by sourcing local produce and suppliers. The outside garden is the most invested part of the pub, with many wildlife sanctuaries, building bug hotels and log piles, The Gate Hangs Well makes sure local wildlife and bugs can thrive. The team work hard to care for the natural wildlife, leading to many impressive species to be found roaming their garden.
“Every community needs leadership and role models. As a pub we have a fantastic opportunity to lead by example. We have an opportunity to be part of a growing movement and demonstrate that simple steps can be taken.”
