The Goat is a beautiful and historic British pub on the village green at Hertford Heath. Set in the heart of rural Hertfordshire, The Goat pride themselves in offering everything a great British pub should, including great food, a classy wine selection and a beer garden or open fire, depending on the season!
Under licensee Laura Hadley-Charter, this local favourite is stealing all the headlines when it comes to sustainable operations within the venue.
As a Greene King tenanted pub, The Goat have introduced LED lighting to replace incandescent bulbs, therefore reducing previous energy consumption by up to 90%. The energy reduction measures extend further, with investment in energy-efficient appliances and energy monitoring technology ensuring that nothing unnecessarily goes to waste.
Laura has implemented recycling programmes in the pub, with any excess food being donated to local charities or food banks, and any food waste going towards compost.
When it comes to the food menus, they have been altered in such a way that The Goat’s customer’s selections means nothing goes to waste. Before ordering, customers are asked whether they would like to opt out of items such as side salads, that so often go to waste in many other venues. Furthermore, the menus have seen an increase in plant-based meal choices with Laura finding innovation on low carbon dishes.
The Goat tries to minimise food miles where possible, aiming to source sustainable and local ingredients for use in dishes. This further reduces their carbon footprint in addition to the aforementioned initiatives.
Staff members at The Goat are consistently educated and reminded about sustainable practices. Many of them have now joined a community group which runs village events focused on sustainability. This outstanding work means that the good work of the village pub extends to the local community and promotes best practice all round.
We are delighted to award The Goat with our Sustainability Champion status and look forward to seeing their wonderful work continue in the future.
