The Swan Inn is a traditional pub found in the beautiful village of Lympstone, Exmouth. Run by Daren Newman, The Swan Inn is known within the community for the delicious locally-sourced food and drinks as they champion Devon’s food heroes and source ingredients directly from them whenever possible.
Around the pub, LED bulbs have been installed to cut down on their electricity usage, along with new voltage reduction equipment. Sensors have been put in place in the staff storage areas, as well as the toilets.
Waste reduction is very important at The Swan Inn, with many initiatives put in place to cut down on unwanted waste. All waste is recycled where possible, and food waste is put in the compost bin and all single-use plastics have been removed within pub operations. The menus are adapted to reduce waste, such as only offering side salads to those who want it, and there are plenty of meat-free low-carbon choices. Any leftover meals are donated to those in need, along with the pub acting as a warm space with soup for friends of the local church.
The team are engaged in many aspects of The Swan Inn’s sustainability journey. Staff members and customers are encouraged to use the trainline to get to the pub, along with cycling after the new installation of bike racks and bike tools within the pub to facilitate cyclists. For the community, The Swan Inn regularly help litter picking outside the village square, to help clean up the surrounding areas.
With everything that The Swan Inn are doing, we are delighted to award them with our Sustainability Champions Award.
