Ollie Coulombeau, finalist for our Licensee of the Year Competition 2023 and manager for the lovely community pub – The Turk’s Head in Twickenham – became an inaugural Sustainability Champion at our Summer Event in June.
The Turk’s Head is part of the Fuller’s family, who are committed to procuring 100% renewable energy across their managed estate and support centre. Their energy is sourced from a mixture of wind, solar and hydroelectric.
The use of modern technology at The Turk’s Head didn’t stop at introducing smart electricity and gas metres – Ollie went one step further. His IT team developed a pub manager’s online tool to help the team and Ollie understand how and when they are using energy, providing them opportunities to identity energy saving techniques.
Their remote beer coolers have smart timers which switch off the refrigeration overnight, saving up to 25% of electricity without impacting the beer quality. This same technology has been added to their post mix coolers. They have also changed the temperature controls on the cellar cooling unit where the beer is stored at the correct temperature rather than the ambient temperature of the cellar – reducing energy usage by 20%.
The Turk’s Head also partnered with Green Goblet to partake in a reusable cups trial during the busiest time of the year – the Rugby Autumn Internationals in November 2022. During this trial, over 65,000 single use plastic cups were saved from landfill across just five pubs in the local area. Now The Turk’s Head partners with Green Goblet on any big event they host. On a day-to-day basis, to discourage the use of single use water bottles, The Turk’s Head provides a Refill Station where anyone can fill their water bottles for free.
The Turk’s Head is a vital part of the community, and they love to support their customers. They host The Turk’s Head annual 10k Race – with a family fun day at the pub – raising money for charity.
Ollie Coulombeau shares: “While we recognise there is still a long way to go – I am super proud that Sustainability is now a key part of the planning stage of everything we do. The Turk’s Head is a key part of the local community so it’s important to lead by example. Our community is very active when it comes to tackling issues around sustainability so it’s great to be at the heart of that – providing a safe and comfortable space for groups to meet or host events.”
