Vianet’s goal is to be operating as a net zero carbon consumption company by 2030. Two core areas influence this within the business – their office’s carbon emissions, and the fleet of vehicles they run for service, engineering, and customer installations.

The Vianet Head Office previously emitted approximately 78 tonnes of carbon per annum through electricity usage. In 2022, they launched a Sustainability project which will see that consumption fall by around 86% – down to near 11 tonnes – by the end of this year.

This has been achieved through a number of initiatives underpinned by an independent external audit on areas Vianet could focus on.

As a result of this, solar panels were installed in October 2022 and all incandescent lightbulbs were changed to LED to cut down their energy usage. Hand dryers and a water dispensers were installed, in turn reducing carbon consumption, while on-premise server room energy and cooling requirements have also been reduced. When it comes to their vehicle fleet, electric company cars are now offered to employees.

Furthermore, in order to involve staff in their green initiatives, Vianet has a sustainability committee that is open to all in the business, with meetings held once a month to discuss upcoming projects, current progress, and future goals. Staff are also sent a reminder at 4pm each day which pops up on every computer screen to remind them to turn off their equipment properly at the end of the day.

Since April, Vianet has reduced electricity consumption by 60.2%, from 148,050 kwh to 58,868 kwh just by the aforementioned solar panels. The 89,182 kwh saved represents 23 tonnes of CO² reduced over 7 months. This has saved the company £17k in cost and they have sold £1.4k worth of electricity to the grid, showing that money can be made, not just saved, from sustainability initiatives.

We are proud to award yet another one of our Trusted Partners with our Sustainability Champion status.
