Westons Cider

Westons Cider is a sustainability champion because they have shown commitment to running a sustainable business. They have shown that they are actively involved in energy reduction, waste reduction, sustainable procurement, as well as pushing for customer and team engagement to being sustainable.

Westons Cider, based in the Herefordshire village of Much Marcle, is a premium cider producer dating back to 1880. Having been rooted in the rural community for over 140 years, Westons know that actions speak louder than words, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to sustainability initiatives within the business.

In the last year, Westons have increased solar use by 300%, saving 60 tonnes of CO² in the process. They have also increased efficiency by ensuring that their two new cider presses run entirely off of renewable energy sources, making them 20% more efficient than previous machines.

With regards to waste reduction, their cider producer has moved from trays to cardboard pads, meaning that by the end of 2023, they will have removed 72 tonnes of cardboard from the system. Additionally, the company’s investment into new labelling technology has enabled them to apply paper labels on their two main bottling lines. This increases the paper labels on Westons’ brands to 95%.

Sourcing from local suppliers is of paramount importance to Westons, with the business obtaining all of their fruit from within a 50 mile radius of the mill. They have also partnered with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, helping them to develop and maintain natural habitats. Over 25 varieties of birds can be found in their wetlands and reed beds and it is key to the business that these species are protected.

In the long term, Westons are working towards being a net zero business, by focusing improvements in three key areas. These three emission areas include: on-site emissions, electricity imported to the site, and 3rd party logistics and suppliers of raw materials. They have also committed to industry leaders that they will have a 46% reduction in all areas by 2030.

We are delighted to award Westons Cider with Sustainability Champion – Company Edition status and we look forward to seeing their outstanding efforts continue in the future.
