Graham Arms Inn

About Graham Arms Inn

The Graham Arms is an old coaching Inn, built in roughly 1760. It is now grade 2 listed and still has many original features, despite a lot of alterations and neglect over the years.
For the past 3 years we have been here, working our way through a long list of repairs, which can be very restrictive with a grade 2 listed building and very expensive, but we earn a bit, save it up and then repair another area.

We are the main pub in the heart of our community. But we are more than just a pub, we are a hub for the local community, an extended living room for our regulars, a place where family’s, friends, hotel guests and visitors sit and interact together, share stories, offer help and advice, & have a proper good old conversation.

“I believe our pub, the Graham Arms Inn is the heart of the community for many of our reasons stated.

I often describe our bar as a big living room, that friends get together for company. We laugh together, cry together, lift each other up and look out for one another. We get together for business meetings, for parties, christenings, weddings and funerals. We have bingo and live singers.”

About the Local Community

We sponsor a few different groups. Longtown Football team. Longtown Bowling Club, a young lad who plays football for a local team and a customer who plays cricket for a local team.
I’ve also just set up a Business breakfast network group and I’m working with the manager of Longtown Community center and together we have organised a family fun day in the town on 1st August.

I’m also in the process of setting up a CIC for events in the town, this way I can gain help and funding to do more in the town for the youth and community, examples will be markets, Fun days, sporting activities, Halloween and Christmas events for the kids, and next year we have the Tour De France passing through, so I’m in the process of sorting this out with other groups i am involved with working with the parish council which I am now a member, and Carlisle city council. And from our networking meetings the school is keen to get involved, so we will be working together organising fun days and activities. I am also in early stages of working with another local business to develop more sporting opportunities in the town.

We sponsor and support our local football team, which is very important to our small town, helping keep sporting activities going for people is extremely important as not only is it fun, it encourages team building and exercise is a fantastic support for mental health wellbeing.

Myself ( Vanessa Luckley) and my daughter Emma Simpson are currently supporting a regular customer, Emma has been involved with caring for him and liaising with doctors and sorting his appointments. Now he is in hospital we are taking it in turn to visit him as he has no family close by and check his home and bills are sorted. We are also acting next of kin so the doctors have someone to check with and we then update his brother who lives away. We also run his brother about when he gets down to visit and take him to the hospital to visit.

Over the years we have checked in on many customers as you get to know them so well, helping them and their family’s out with lifts, visits, shopping or even a hair cut (vanessa).
But not only us the owners, this is what the team here at the Graham Arms have done forever. When you get to know your regulars so well and know their routines we often pick up on when there is a problem.

A local lad last week was needing a shoulder and Emma was a great support for him as he was in a pretty bad place, but she sat outside with him talking and listening for a couple of hours.
One of our team was a decorator, he has painted for people when they have been stuck.

Our chef often helps others out in the community, volunteering to help cook for the pensioners at the Christmas party in the community center with another local business., and is also known to help customers build a shed or fix a gate.

About Local Businesses

The family fun day Esk Vibe I have helped arranged, working with the local community center. Was set up as we are keen to get a town gala going again. But without funding for now, we thought we would get the local businesses together and put together a fun day. We have raised some money and went round the community gaining a few sponsors. This way we are able to put on a free afternoon tea in the social club, and free children’s activities in the community center.

I have organized our local ( 14 miles away )small independent brewery to put on our first Beerfest, this gives people a chance to try what they have to offer. They are helping us and we are helping them.

I have also set up the networking breakfast, to bring together other local businesses, which is very important for the growth of the town, but its also a way to share ideas and concerns with each other. As a business we try and support local as much as possible, we use local shops and suppliers in our restaurant, we have locally brewed ales on our bar, our laundry and cooking oil is company’s only 30 minutes away and other produce comes from Carlisle which is 9 miles away.

We close our lunchtime restaurant in the winter months, this way the other two local cafes can benefit when the quieter months are here and tourism in the town is quiet. When we get a day off we usually visit a local to us business for food or drinks as we are surrounded by great places.

We also sponsor the local football team and we host for free their after match get togethers, we provide a buffet and the use of the function room, where they get to talk, relax and watch a bit of sport on tv or play a game of pool. We even have the stage area dedicated to past local teams and players, with pictures and trophies on display. We help other hospitality businesses close to us, as they do with us , with advice, a helping hand if needed, a loan of stock or help with cover when needed.

A lot of our suppliers are within a couple of miles from the Inn and they are brilliant. Any problems and they can get produce out to us that day. As a business I think it is hugely important that we work with other small, independent family run businesses. We all look out for each other and recommend each other. We know these people by name, we chat to them every week.

I would love to say if we closed we wouldn’t make too much of an impact for these suppliers, but if more and more independent businesses closed, then yes there would be a detrimental impact to all these small, family run businesses in the hospitality service industry. We rely on each other, we support each other and we help each other when we can. That’s the great thing about being in a small community.

About Staff at Graham Arms Inn

All our staff at the Graham Arms are from Longtown, we have all grown up knowing each others families. A lot of the team are family of the previous owners with some of the staff working here close to 20 years. Our young restaurant team all go to the local school together and we are proud that we are helping to build their confidence ready for their next career step in life.
We offer training and support in all roles, but most of all we listen to their views and opinions, they are the people who know the best for their roles, so we listen and welcome their input and advice.

We organise days out to visit exhibitions, so the team can see what’s new and we can all get fresh ideas. Team bonding is also very important, we have days out socially together throughout the year, food, drinks or games

About Charity Work at Graham Arms Inn

We support quite a few local and national charities. We raise money all year round doing different things from collection pots to scratch cards, bingo nights, spot the ball and raffles. Our community always come together when asked.

In January we also had customers doing dry January, we wouldn’t serve them anything other than pop and we raised over £1000 for two of our charities. I also raised money from a raffle last year to help another business out, the Longtown Social club, as they needed a new roof after storm damage. I also raised money for a local pet shelter.
