New Fountain Inn

About New Fountain Inn

The New Fountain Inn is a family-run, independent village pub in the heart of Whimple, East Devon. What makes us particularly special is the story behind us. Our family bought the pub in 2022 following the community’s campaign to save it from being lost to housing, and we reopened the doors in April 2023 with one simple aim: to make it a pub the village could be proud of.

We’re passionate about good food, a welcoming atmosphere and keeping the traditional village pub at the centre of its community. Our kitchen focuses on freshly prepared food, using quality local produce wherever possible, alongside proper pub classics, regularly changing specials, Sunday roasts and dishes from our smoker.

I believe the New Fountain Inn is at the heart of our community because our community is the reason we are still here.

Before our family took over, local people came together through the Save the Fountain campaign because they didn’t want to lose their village pub to housing. That told us something very important from the beginning: this building meant far more to Whimple than somewhere to buy a pint.

About the Local Community

Supporting our local community is at the heart of the New Fountain Inn. Our pub was saved because people within the community cared about its future, so we have always felt a responsibility to give something back and support the clubs, schools, organisations and individuals around us.

Our support takes many different forms. We host and promote fundraising events, provide raffle prizes and vouchers, help publicise local activities through our social media channels, provide a venue where groups and communities can come together, and support fundraising initiatives wherever we reasonably can.

Our quiz nights have become particularly important community events. We have hosted quizzes for local organisations and individual causes, including an event for a local family affected by cancer which brought together 18 teams and raised more than £1,600. We have also supported fundraising for the local pre-school and other charitable causes.

We have strong links with our local sporting community through Whimple Football Club and Whimple Cricket Club, and we are keen to support grassroots sport because these clubs, just like the village pub, provide places where different generations can meet, socialise and feel part of something.

Our relationship with local schools and younger members of the community is equally important. We support Whimple Primary School, Whimple Pre-School and the Scouts, helping with fundraising, events and other initiatives. We have also provided work-experience opportunities for young people, giving them an introduction to hospitality and the workplace.

We support organisations such as Whimple Village Hall and the Gardening Club, as well as neighbouring rural organisations including Heathfield Farm at Broadclyst. We also work closely with and promote the Whimple Heritage Centre, located next door to the pub, helping visitors discover more about the history of our village.

Importantly, community support isn’t always about writing a cheque. Often what we can offer is just as valuable: our premises, our time, our reach on social media, our customer base and our ability to bring people together. If a local club or organisation needs help promoting an event, raising funds or simply getting people through the door, we will always try to help.
We genuinely believe that a village pub should contribute to the place in which it operates rather than simply trade within it.

When a local family was going through an incredibly difficult time following a cancer diagnosis, we wanted to do more than simply make a donation, so we decided to use the pub and the community around us to make a genuine difference.

We organised a special charity quiz night and put everything we could behind it, using our social media, customers and local connections to encourage as many people as possible to get involved. The response was incredible. Eighteen teams filled the pub and together we raised more than £1,600 for the family.

For us, though, it wasn’t simply about the amount of money raised. It was about giving people somewhere to come together and show a local family that their community was behind them during an extremely difficult period.

We’ve tried to take that same approach whenever somebody locally needs support. Whether it’s a regular experiencing difficult circumstances, a local school or pre-school fundraising, the Scouts needing support, a sports club, a charity or another village organisation, we’ll always ask ourselves what we can actually do to help. Sometimes that’s a donation or raffle prize, but often it’s giving our time, providing the venue, promoting something to thousands of people through our social media or bringing our customers together behind a cause.

That particular evening is something I’m extremely proud of because it demonstrated what I believe a proper village pub should be.

About Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses is a really important part of how we operate the New Fountain Inn. We are an independent family business ourselves, so we understand how valuable it is when another local business chooses to spend its money with you rather than automatically going to a large national supplier.

Wherever it is practical, we try to buy locally and build genuine relationships with independent suppliers. Our meat, fish, vegetables and other produce are sourced through local and regional suppliers, including Fordmore Farm Shop for meat, DQF and Kingfisher for fish, and Goosemoor and Frank H Mann for fresh produce. Using local suppliers gives us access to quality produce while also keeping more of our spending within Devon and the surrounding area.

We are particularly proud of being able to tell customers where their food has come from. For example, we have featured locally sourced Devon Longhorn beef on our menus. For us, putting the name and provenance of quality local produce in front of customers is also a way of promoting the people and businesses behind it.

Our support goes beyond simply purchasing products. We regularly promote other local businesses through our social media, recommend them to customers and work collaboratively with businesses and organisations around the village. We have a particularly close relationship with the Whimple Heritage Centre next door, encouraging visitors to discover more of Whimple and, in turn, helping bring more people into the village.

We also try to create reasons for people to visit Whimple. Our food events, live music, quizzes and other activities don’t just benefit the pub. They bring people into the village who may then discover other local businesses and attractions.

One of the biggest lessons from running an independent pub is that small businesses are stronger when they support one another. Price will always be important, but we don’t believe purchasing decisions should be based on price alone. Quality, reliability, provenance and the relationship with the supplier matter too.

Building strong relationships with our suppliers has been incredibly important to us from the beginning. When we reopened the New Fountain Inn, we didn’t just want companies that would deliver products to our back door; we wanted to work with people who understood what we were trying to achieve and who could grow alongside us.

Over time, many of those relationships have become much more personal. We speak regularly with our suppliers, listen to their advice, discuss what’s available and in season, and work together on the products we put onto our menus. They aren’t simply names on invoices – we know the people behind the businesses, and they know us.

We deliberately try to use local and regional suppliers wherever practical. Our relationships include Fordmore Farm Shop for our meat, DQF and Kingfisher for fish, Goosemoor and Frank H Mann for fresh produce, and local and regional businesses such as RD Johns and Bookers for other essential supplies.

About Staff at New Fountain Inn

For me, supporting our staff goes far beyond paying somebody to come in and do a shift. We are a family-run business, and with a relatively small team every person matters. I want the New Fountain Inn to be somewhere people can grow in confidence, develop skills and feel that somebody genuinely believes in them.

Professionally, we try to develop people rather than pigeonhole them into one role. We encourage team members to learn different parts of the business, from front of house and bar work to understanding customer service, food, stock and the day-to-day responsibilities involved in running a busy pub. As people’s confidence grows, we give them greater responsibility and encourage them to make decisions for themselves.

I also believe supporting staff means being prepared to have difficult conversations. We have introduced clearer procedures, expectations and policies as the business has grown. When something goes wrong, my preference is to understand why it happened, address it properly and give the individual an opportunity to learn from it. Maintaining standards is important, but so is helping people understand those standards and giving them the tools to succee
