Old House At Home

About Old House At Home

The Old House at Home is a traditional village pub in Dormansland, Surrey, but we are much more than somewhere to eat and drink. We aim to be a genuine community hub where everyone feels welcome, whether meeting friends, joining an event, bringing the family or simply looking for company.

We bring people together through quizzes, live music, themed events and community activities, while regularly fundraising for local and national charities. Our charity quizzes run every 6–8 weeks, alongside larger events including charity golf, Macmillan fundraising and our community dog show. Sustainability is also central to us, through reducing waste, reusing materials, growing produce and supporting greener travel.

We believe The Old House at Home is the heart of our community because it brings people together. Families, older residents, sports teams, local businesses, charities and community groups connect here through events, fundraising, live music and quizzes. We support local causes, promote independent businesses, help local teams and look out for our regulars and neighbours.

About the Local Community

We support a wide range of local clubs, groups and community interests. We have provided football kits for Lingfield FC U11s and for Lingfield FC U14 Girls, the only girls’ team in the area. We also work closely with Dormansland Church on community initiatives, support local charities and fundraisers with our venue, time and promotion, and encourage community activity through our cycle shelter, repair station and Dr Bike events. Our charity dog show supports the local dog-owning community, while live music, quizzes and other events bring people of all ages together.

We believe being a village pub means genuinely looking out for the people around us. We hold a spare key for an elderly local neighbour so that, if she is ever in difficulty, we can help quickly. If we have not seen her for a while, or another neighbour raises a concern, we will check that she is safe and well. It is not something we do for recognition; it is simply part of being embedded in the community. For us, going above and beyond means noticing when someone may need help, being trusted by local people and being there when it really matters.

About Local Businesses

We actively support local businesses by buying locally wherever possible, recommending and promoting them to our customers and involving them in community events. We invite local businesses to take part in initiatives such as our Christmas market and charity dog show, where many sponsor classes, donate prizes or showcase their services. We also promote participating businesses through our social media and event publicity, helping introduce them to new customers. We value collaboration over competition and try to use the pub as a platform to support other independent businesses in the area.

We have built strong relationships with our suppliers by treating them as partners rather than simply businesses we buy from. Wherever possible, we use local and independent suppliers, communicate regularly, recommend them to customers and involve them in events and promotions. Many support us with prizes, sponsorship and products for community and charity events, while we support them through regular trade, promotion and introductions to new customers. These relationships are mutually important: if the pub closed, local suppliers would lose not only a customer, but also a valuable place to showcase their products, reach local people and take part in community events.

About Staff at Old House At Home

Our team are central to everything we do, from welcoming customers to supporting charity events, community activities and sustainability initiatives. We encourage staff to contribute ideas, take ownership and play an active role in the pub and wider community.

We invest in training and development, particularly around sustainability and responsible hospitality. This was recognised nationally when The Old House at Home won the BII NITAs Sustainability Training Award, reflecting how we involve and educate the whole team.

We also support staff personally through flexibility, open communication and understanding individual circumstances. In return, our team regularly go above and beyond for customers, community events and fundraising.

About Charity Work at Old House At Home

We fundraise throughout the year through regular charity quizzes, raffles, community events, special fundraising days and direct donations. Our charity quizzes take place around every 6–8 weeks, supporting a different cause each time, and we also organise larger events including charity golf, Macmillan fundraising and our community dog show. We support charities not only with cash donations, but also by donating prizes, vouchers, food, staff time and helping to organise events. Community involvement is a major part of what we do, and we were proud to be recognised as a Community Hero finalist in the Central Sussex Business Awards, reflecting our wider commitment to supporting local people, charities and good causes.
