The Berkeley Arms

About The Berkeley Arms

The Berkeley Arms is a traditional village pub at the heart of Bosham, offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere where locals, visitors, families and friends all feel at home. We are a true community pub with a strong food offering, serving traditional pub classics alongside seasonal specials made using locally sourced ingredients.

Our customers range from long-standing village residents and retired locals to young families, holidaymakers, walkers, sports clubs and visitors attending events at Goodwood. Many of our regulars visit several times a week and have become part of what we affectionately call “The Berkeley Family”.

Our team is encouraged to let their individual personalities shine, creating a welcoming and authentic environment that customers immediately recognise. Many of our staff have worked with us for years, and customers know them by name. This continuity creates a sense of familiarity that is increasingly rare.

“Our customers know that they can walk through the door and find a friendly face, a listening ear and a genuine sense of belonging. We support local organisations, create opportunities for people to come together and help individuals through both good times and difficult times. The pub has become a focal point for community life in Bosham, and we are incredibly proud of the role we play.”

About the Local Community

The Berkeley Arms supports a wide variety of local groups and organisations.
We host a local ukulele group every other Wednesday, provide space for Bosham WI coffee mornings, accommodate local book clubs and welcome an over-60s keep-fit group for seasonal gatherings.

We sponsor Bosham Football Club, Chidham Cricket Club and Havant Rugby Club, helping support grassroots sport within our community. We also provide post-match hospitality and meeting facilities for local sports teams.

During the Covid lockdowns, we adapted our business to deliver meals to local residents, many of whom were isolated or vulnerable. What started as a fish and chip delivery service expanded to include Sunday roasts, burgers, pies, special occasion meals and even bespoke requests for birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations.

One particularly memorable example was when a customer requested a special anniversary meal despite it being a day we were not normally operating. Initially I declined, but quickly realised how important these moments were during such difficult times. We prepared a special meal and delivered it, helping create a memorable occasion during a period when people had very little to celebrate.

We also support fundraising initiatives for organisations including Dementia UK, Chestnut Tree House, Stonepillow, Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, the Licensed Trade Charity, Clymping Dog Sanctuary, George’s Rockstars and the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance.

About Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses is central to our ethos. We source extensively from local suppliers including butchers, bakers, seafood suppliers, greengrocers and independent trade suppliers. We regularly collaborate with local businesses through cross-promotion, sponsorship, fundraising initiatives and community events. We believe that when local businesses support one another, the entire community benefits.

Many of our supplier relationships have been built over decades and are based on trust, loyalty and mutual support. We work closely with local suppliers because we value the quality of their products, their knowledge and their contribution to the local economy.
The relationship is mutually beneficial. Our suppliers help us deliver the quality our customers expect, while our business provides them with regular trade and exposure to our customers. If the pub were to close, it would not only affect our staff and customers but also the network of local businesses who benefit from our ongoing support and custom.

About Staff at The Berkeley Arms

Professionally, we invest heavily in training through apprenticeships, accredited courses, cellar management training, first aid qualifications and in-house development programmes. Staff are encouraged to specialise in areas they enjoy, whether that’s coffee, customer service, wine, events or management. We also run staff-led training sessions which allow team members to build leadership and presentation skills while sharing their knowledge with colleagues.

Personally, we support our staff through life’s challenges. We take staff wellbeing seriously and create a culture where people know they can talk openly. We regularly check in with team members, signpost support services where appropriate and create an environment where people feel genuinely cared for. Several former employees have returned after exploring other career paths because they view the pub as a supportive and nurturing workplace.

Watching young team members grow in confidence, develop skills and move on to successful careers is one of my greatest achievements.
