The Farmers Arms

About The Farmers Arms

The Farmers Arms provides a warm and friendly welcome to everyone that comes through our doors. Our helpful staff welcome regulars, dog-walkers, cyclists and visitors to the area. We are a traditional community focused pub that offers a café menu during the day, food in the evenings and a variety of community focused events throughout the year.

What makes us unique is that we promote ourselves as a “café” during the day, which means we encourage visitors who may not normally consider visiting a pub. We are family friendly, providing toys and games to all our younger visitors and have even been known to give out free sweets to the most well-behaved children (and adults!). We are dog-friendly, inside and out, offering dog blankets, doggy treats, and even doggy ice-cream.

In the evenings we offer lots of community events from Painting in the Pub to Dad’s Club, Tarot Reading and Open Mic nights. We are a fierce promoter of live music, offering regular Saturday night gigs for local musicians and are increasingly popular chilled Sunday afternoon acoustic music sessions, featuring everything from pop to jazz and folk music. We recently hosted an all day Jazz Festival, a first for Kelsall, which we hope to build on.

We also offer free motorhome stopovers and have received fantastic reviews praising our extremely friendly welcome, with lots of returning visitors. Recently installed a Royal Mail Parcel Locker as the village has recently lost it’s only Post Office and in the few weeks since it has been installed it is already getting heavy use throughout the community.

In the two plus years we have been at The Farmers Arms we have brought the community together through charity events, community groups and offering a welcoming and safe space for everyone. We brought our previous business over with us, so we open as a “café” during the day (The Crow’s Nest Café) and a pub at night.

We find that this brings new people into the pub environment who may not ordinarily consider it, some people feel more at ease with this and welcome the friendly, community feel we have achieved.

We have done everything we can to bring the whole community into our pub by offering something for everyone. We have hosted charity quizzes, school bingos, charity race nights, introduced live music, including jazz and folk music sessions, open-mic nights, comedy nights, a weekly quiz, Pop-up food vendors, Painting in the Pub events, Willow Workshops, Bingo Bangers, Tarot reading evenings, Art appreciation group, Breakfast with Santa, Santa Paws events, Pop-up shops, Christmas Market, Business Network meetings and more recently set up a Dad’s Club.

About the Local Community

We sponsor a local under 14s football team and have provided them (for the first time) with complete home and away kits. We also support the local (adults) football team, who use us after their matches. We also have a Race Night planned for them to raise vital funds. We support the local folk music community by hosting monthly music sessions, as well as sponsoring their annual Folk Music Festival.

We support two local primary schools hosting Bingos & Race Nights in our venue, as well as supporting with school based activities, helping to raise over £4000 so far. Supporting lots of local charities hosting numerous fundraising events to gain extra funding is something important to us.

Our pub is also used as a venue for a newly formed Business Networking group which meets up fortnightly and who enjoy our famous sausage butties, they have use of our screen & projector for presentations and enjoy sole use before opening time. We are also a venue for a local Art teacher who outgrew her previous premises, she offers Art appreciation courses which are so popular that she has just completed her fourth round of courses. One of our regulars is a primary school teacher at the local village school, when we first arrived in Kelsall she “stalked” us on social media, discovered some of the fundraising events we had been involved with at our previous location and approached us to get involved with their dwindling PTA group. Since then we have hosted numerous events including a couple of Easter Bingos which usually sees the appearance of Dave (landlord) dressed in an inflatable Easter Bunny costume.

Last year our main chosen charity was Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, we raised funds on behalf of one of our customers who was under their care for breast cancer, with a special “boobie” quiz where all the guys wore bras, as well as hosting an Elvis tribute show, a charity race night and other activities, including commissioning and selling hand knitted Easter Chicks, Christmas decorations and Halloween pumpkins. We have raised over £3500 for this charity.

About Local Businesses

As well as hosting a regular business networking group we work closely with lots of local businesses. We have a business board and area for business to display their business cards. We also promote local business on our screens (free of charge). We have organised pop-up shops in the pub for a variety of businesses, including a bakery, jewellery, art prints, honey. This culminated in our Christmas market that promoted local small businesses.

We also display work from a local artists, with prints for customers to buy and we have cushions made from a local small business which are available to buy. From the beginning we have worked closely with a newly formed local Creative company who host our ever popular Painting in the Pub events, they have become firm friends and we even helped them to source new premises when their business was expanding, handily just down the road from our pub.

We have used the same supplier of sausages since we started our previous business and brought them over with us when we changed location and moved from a cafe into a cafe/pub. We are continually asked where our sausages come from and customers are so disappointed to find out they are wholesale only. Whilst we are in the Cheshire area we will never think of changing this staple of our Full English Breakfast, which we are so well known for.

About Staff at The Farmers Arms

We employ local staff as much as possible, but also brought some staff with us from our previous cafe business, so also have experienced staff that have been with us for over five years.

Our more experienced staff are invaluable for training new staff and as we employ young staff that are regularly moving on to university, as is usually the case in hospitality we have a growing staff team. We have trained staff to support our Under 25 policy, we have also put a number of staff through Food Hygiene training.

About Charity Work at The Farmers Arms

We have hosted Quiz Nights for Kelsall PTA, St Lukes Hospice, Alzheimer’s UK, MIND, Age UK, RNLI, Cheshire Search & Rescue. Charity Horse Racing Nights on our big screen for Cheshire Search & Rescue, RNLI, Delamere Primary School, Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

Additionally, we have hosted two Easter Bingo events & a Christmas Bingo for Kelsall primary school. We have also hosted two Burns Nights, the proceeds of which have gone first to our local Well Being Hub and latterly to Cheshire Search & Rescue. We are currently hosting Tarot Reading evenings where the proceeds of each reading will go to Cheshire Search & Rescue (this year’s chosen charity).
