About The Horse and Jockey

The Horse and Jockey is one of Manchester’s oldest pubs, with a history on Chorlton Green stretching back around 500 years. When we took it on, our aim wasn’t to reinvent it but to restore it as a proper community pub. We carefully brought original features back to life, reopened the real fires and created an environment that feels true to the building’s history.

Today, the Horse and Jockey is a place where people can come in for a pint after walking the dog, enjoy a Sunday lunch with family or celebrate a special occasion, all under the same roof. We’ve also worked to reconnect the pub with the community by supporting local schools, community groups and organisations including the Ryebank Fields campaign.

“We believe a pub is at the heart of its community when it creates opportunities as well as memories. At The Horse and Jockey, we’re proud to employ local people, often giving young people their first job and helping them build confidence and skills. Many of our team are the sons and daughters of local families, making the Horse and Jockey part of the community both inside and outside the pub.”

About the Local Community

The Horse and Jockey is an active part of community life in Chorlton. We’re members of the Beech Road Traders Association and work with local organisations to support events and initiatives across the area. We host community groups including book clubs and the local chess club, support local language lessons, and have worked with affiliates of the GAA by hosting planning meetings ahead of two new Gaelic football pitches. We’ve also worked alongside the local markets and Manchester City Council to help return the markets to Chorlton Green after almost a decade, helping bring more people into the heart of the community.

We once helped a regular who was organising an important meeting for the GAA, bringing together the board and its President. Their original venue fell through at short notice, leaving them under considerable pressure to find somewhere suitable.

We stepped in without hesitation, rearranged our plans and hosted the meeting, making sure everything ran smoothly. It gave our regular the confidence that such an important occasion would be looked after properly, and from that one act of support we’ve built a strong relationship with the local GAA community. We’ve since continued to host meetings and support preparations for the development of two new Gaelic football pitches in the area.

About Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses is an important part of The Horse and Jockey’s role within the community. As active members of the Beech Road Traders Association, we work collaboratively with neighbouring businesses to promote Chorlton as a destination.

We’ve supported the monthly Makers Market in returning to Chorlton Green, helping bring more visitors into the area. We also prioritise working with local musicians for our live music nights and regularly collaborate with nearby businesses, including florists and estate agents, creating opportunities that benefit the wider local economy rather than just our own pub.

We value long-term relationships with local suppliers and businesses, choosing to work with them wherever possible. We work closely with a local florist for seasonal events such as Mother’s Day and to maintain our external planting, while our local butcher and fishmonger play an important role in delivering the quality our guests expect.

These relationships are built on trust and regular custom rather than one-off transactions. While we’re only one of many businesses they supply, we’re proud to provide a consistent source of trade that supports other independent businesses in the area. The same is true of the monthly Makers Market, where the Horse and Jockey plays an important role in helping attract visitors and create a welcoming base for traders throughout the day.

About Staff at The Horse and Jockey

Our team are at the heart of everything we do. We encourage them to build genuine relationships with our guests and become part of the life of Chorlton, rather than simply providing service.

We invest in training, product knowledge and coaching, giving people the confidence to make decisions and contribute ideas. Success isn’t measured by upselling, but by how well we look after our guests and each other.

We also support our team as individuals, creating an environment where people feel respected, listened to and able to grow. That culture is reflected in the way they welcome guests and support the local community every day.

About Charity Work at The Horse and Jockey

We believe community support should reflect the people who use our pub.

We proudly support the Ryebank Fields campaign, helping protect local green space, alongside Dogs Trust, reflecting our reputation as one of Manchester’s most dog-friendly pubs. We also support Little Healing Hearts and champion The Burnt Chef Project, raising awareness of mental health in hospitality.

Alongside these partnerships, we regularly support local schools, community groups and fundraising initiatives, using the pub to bring people together for causes that matter locally.
