About The Swan

The Swan is a traditional community pub in the heart of Thornbury High Street—a place where all generations are welcomed, friendships are formed and people come together to support one another.

What makes us unique is the scale of our community involvement. We have raised more than £218,000 for charities and local causes, supporting a different charity each month through raffles, bingo, entertainment and special events. Our ambition is to reach £250,000 by the end of 2027.

The Swan is also home to Love Thornbury, which I run to bring people back to our High Street through accessible community events, free family activities and live entertainment.

I believe The Swan is the heart of our community because I never say no when somebody genuinely needs our help. We welcome everyone, bring people together and look after those who may otherwise feel forgotten.

We have raised more than £218,000 for charities and local causes, supported vulnerable regulars, provided a home for social groups and created free events for families.

About the Local Community

We support Love Thornbury, local charities, schools, community groups, musicians, entertainers and independent High Street businesses. We provide meeting and fundraising space, promote their activities and donate prizes, refreshments and staff time free of charge. The following groups use our function room etc free of charge: fishing group Monday. Cycling Group Thursday; the Drama Group Tuesday evening, as well as Welcome Walkers monthly Age Concern Walkers have their coffee and cake on Monday. Spanish group Thursday Morning, to name but a few

The Swan hosts weekly knit-and-crochet groups, Meet-Up Mondays for people seeking friendship and regular charity events. We also support local performers by providing paid opportunities and publicity.

Through Love Thornbury, we bring businesses, volunteers and community organisations together to deliver free children’s activities, seasonal celebrations and High Street events. We also work with Thornbury Lodge, Thornbury in Bloom and local welfare organisations to raise funds and reach people who may need additional support.

Gordy was an elderly regular with no family to support him. When he lost his accommodation, I found him a new flat, furnished it, helped secure his benefits and made sure he was safe.

As his health declined, I became his power of attorney and next of kin. I supported him through hospital and care-home stays, took him on outings and helped put his affairs in order. I was also the person who had to tell him he was terminally ill.

During his final 36 hours, I stayed beside him in the care home so he would not die alone. This was especially difficult because I had only recently experienced the same thing with both of my parents, but I could not leave Gordy without someone beside him.

After he died last November, I arranged the dignified send-off he deserved. The Swan community had become his family, and I still visit his grave regularly because my commitment to him did not end when he passed away.

About Local Businesses

I founded and run Love Thornbury to bring people back to the High Street and encourage them to support its independent businesses. We organise free community events throughout the year, creating additional footfall and giving local traders, makers and organisations opportunities to promote themselves.

I also arrange joint promotions. For example, when our local garden centre was trading, customers spending a qualifying amount received a voucher for a free coffee at The Swan. This encouraged customers to visit both businesses and benefited the wider High Street.

We promote local businesses on social media, purchase locally wherever possible, donate and exchange raffle prizes, host stalls and encourage businesses to participate in our trails, competitions and seasonal events. Rather than competing in isolation, we work together to keep Thornbury High Street active and welcoming.

This month, I created a Retailers’ Passport encouraging families to visit participating shops and collect stamps. During Pride, I organised a best-dressed window competition, and next month children can follow a bee trail through 15 local businesses.

We promote businesses online, exchange raffle prizes and involve traders in trails, competitions and events. We work together because a thriving High Street benefits everyone.

About Staff at The Swan

My team are at the heart of The Swan. They support fundraising, welcome community groups, help at Love Thornbury events and look out for customers who may be lonely or need extra support.

I support them through flexible rotas, adapted duties and understanding during personal or health difficulties. I encourage their development through practical training, greater responsibility and recognition of their individual strengths.

I lead from the front, welcome their ideas and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn. Most importantly, every team member is valued as a person. That support is reflected in the kindness they show our customers and community.

About Charity Work at The Swan

We choose a different charity each month, often one with a personal connection to our customers or community. Fundraising includes raffles, bingo, collection boxes, themed events, sponsored activities and donations from selected food and drink promotions.

Our staff, customers, local businesses and community groups all contribute, and every pound raised is carefully recorded. We also provide space, publicity and practical support to charities. To date, The Swan has raised more than £218,000, with a goal of reaching £250,000 by the end of 2027.
