The Toad in The Hole

About The Toad in The Hole

The Toad in The Hole is a coastal Freehouse, selling mainly their own beers and collaboration brews and local ales. A couple of years ago they installed a community art gallery in the back section of the pub, which is free to enter and they don’t take a commission. We are the Home of Worthing Festival, a town wide festival held in June each year. It is a Community Interest Company. Amongst hosting creative art and Jazz workshops weekly, The Toad is genuinely a place that anyone can come to on their own and walk away with new friends.

“The Toad in the Hole is the heart of it’s community because we work hard to make it a place where customers will always get a warm welcome, a story and a cracking pint! the door is always open, whoever you may be!”

About the Local Community

We have a number of clubs and groups that use the space, including:

  • Stand Up to Rascim
  • Climate Crew meetings and book club
  • People Planet Pint
  • Guild Care – Gentlemans Coffee Mornings
  • Community Open Art Exhibition for Darkfest ( A worthing wide festival celebrating the dark and surreal)
  • Worthing Festival C.I.C
  • Jazz Workshop (every monday)

Apart from the huge amount of time and effort Worthing Festival (its a huge undertaking and it is growing year on year, welcoming 10,000 visitors to the park, showcasing music from Refugees, West Sussex Youth Orchestra, Audio Active repping youth voices, and more well established touring musicians. building an interactive arts Trail within the Sound Garden showcasing 8 local artists) I am at the end of the day, a Landlady who loves her regulars, and I regularly do things like, drive Merlin home with his shopping when its raining, because his mobility is declining.

I’ve advocated for regulars when they have been really ill and they don’t have any family to help navigate the medical care they need (ive been registered on fall alarms and called the ambulance many a time!). I have keys to regulars homes, because they know I will help them when they need it. It’s so much more than a pub, it’s a way of life and looking after one another.

About Local Businesses

We are part of Worthing Tap Take over and host their meetings, we are members of the local businesses groups who are always sharing information and helping each other out. The biggest thing is helping businesses through the festival, which is via the pub as I suppose as the pub is HQ!

The Worthing Festival is through the month of June and we are currently growing the branding of the festival and fringe with businesses for 2027, which will strengthen Worthing as a cultural destination. We always buy produce as local as possible, showcasing local beer, wine and spirit producers.

About Staff at The Toad in The Hole

Helping young staff find their confidence in themselves and in the work place is something that’s always special to us. It’s important to remember we all make mistakes and it’s how we navigate our way through the mistakes that makes the difference.

I attend my teams gigs, and encourage them to put nights on in the venue whether that be music, performance or an art exhibition. We are looking into brewing apprenticeships in order to offer a career path also. We have regular 1:1’s with staff to check in on how life is inside and outside of work. I’ve helped staff with their Mental Health journey and recommended services such as Hospitality Action and advice on their personal budgeting.

About Charity Work at The Toad in The Hole

We support charities by giving them a free space to meet, whether thats a climate change meet up monthly, or a reggae all dayer to raise awareness about Standing up to Racism. We have held nights about grief and celebrating the life of our loved ones through music and poetry. We play a huge part in Worthing Festival. Half of the pub turns into a workshop, in which I have hired staff to build bars and structures for the festival park, hosted 2 months of community banner making, and hundreds of hours of my time to building something for the town that everyone can see themselves in and be inspired form Worthing and beyond.
