The White Horse

About The White Horse

Nestled just off of Leicestershire’s Watermead Country Park, at the White Horse we offer a pub, with carefully curated food and drink offerings which can be enjoyed within our pub, fantastic beer garden or in our new Courtyard area complete with its own bar and pizza oven!

We aim to make everyone feel welcome, and have a selection of offerings to suit as many as possible. If you are just after a refreshing pint then we have an extensive selection of draught products that can be enjoyed in our bar area by the fire, or in our spacious beer garden during summer.

The location of our pub is a huge attraction for our customers as we provide both a space where you can cosy up and enjoy some refreshments after a long walk, or a space where you can sit outside and enjoy the views from our beer garden of Watermead Park lakes and scenery.

“The White Horse is a well loved pub and has been the scene of many first legal drinks, celebrations, commiserations and even first dates. There is respect for history but an ethos for continually striving to improve. We really love what we do and are proud of what we have achieved so far.”

About the Local Community

We thrive on supporting our customers and locality, and since our opening we have developed some incredible community links. For example, our team took part in charity fundraising through the Three Peaks Challenge in 2024 which raised money to help upkeep the Jade’s Retreat Caravan which provides a respite space, and in 2022 the team did a sky dive to raise funds for cancer charity Birstall BAGs. BBC Radio Leicester’s ‘Sing Christmas’ carol singing live stream was a customer favourite event , so when Radio Leicester stopped broadcasting this, we have continued nevertheless and with the help of connections at St. James’ church we put on a carol service, with readings and a live band accompanying the carol singing. Mulled wine and mince pies are also on offer, really keeping tradition alive! Although we aim to serve the community, national charities MacMillan and Save the Children are supported through our business. The MacMillan coffee morning is a great success to which we add a Great Birstall Bake Off competition for all of our local and talented bakers. We also take part it in the Christmas Jumper day for Save the Children and staff wholeheartedly join in! We have discount available for local business and charity- the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, the local IBIS budget hotel guests as well as blue light card holders, who can all receive discounted food in our pub.

On a larger scale, we support two local litter picking groups, the North Leicestershire Litter Wombles are on foot litter-picking around Watermead Country park and we have rewarded their efforts with refreshments afterwards multiple times. And on the lakes that surround us, Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre run a group of volunteers who quite literally take to the river in canoes armed with grabbers and bags to clear away waste, we have a fabulous long-standing relationship with the LOPC and always welcome any of their team into the pub!

Our pub also serves as a wonderful host for many community groups to have meal. Local groups such as the Wild Women Outdoor Club, the Methodist Church’s Thursday Group and various local walking groups, which demonstrates how our pub is so much more than just food and drink, and serves to be at the centre of the community in Birstall and beyond. At present we are a sponsor of Birstall Rugby Club and we also host and support three darts teams (with some staff players) who will be taking part in a Charity darts marathon later this year to raise funds for MacMillan.

As well as raising money, our Duck Race gets local schools and youth organisations involved, for example the children of the local primary schools have the opportunity to compete in a colouring competition, and the schools even get a free visit from Webster the Duck! Organisations such as the Cadets also get involved helping with logistics on the day, as well as Paddle Plus who are on the river to help the actual race of ducks flow smoothly with their canoeing skills . More recently, we also have had help from Leicester College Event Management students who supported with the running of the day, whilst gaining some invaluable work experience. Involving our local young people not only helps with us raising funds for that years elected beneficiary, but also increases their understanding of the importance of the local community and charities.

About Local Businesses

We aim to support small, local businesses wherever possible and we are constantly willing to try new food and drinks to add to our product list. Long term food suppliers of ours have been the bakery Milners of Blaby, supplying our breads, Rossa’s of Leicester supply our ice cream, whilst David Norths of Rothley supplies us with their delicious homemade desserts and our butcher Glenn Lewin’s in Sileby deals with our meat. On the bar, we have gluten free cakes made for us by Wendy Bakes, a local lady who specialises in gluten free baking. We try our best to have locally sourced drink options behind the bar, our coffee is all from St. Martins of Leicester and we also stock Lazy Dog spirits from Loughborough, North42 Gin (which started off small and local and has since expanded to Norfolk!) and Three Bees honey infused spirits from Market Harborough are some of our favourites! Our uniforms are also locally produced by Tim from Spoilt Rotten. It is worth mentioning that we do not have any local draught products behind our bar, this is a conscious decision as our sister pub (just 150 steps away), stocks local draught products and we aim to keep our product range different, to allow each pub a different offering.

Our support for local businesses goes beyond our menu, and we also strive to support locally with the services we use, our popular pub garden is made even better by ‘Just the Gardener’ and Ladybird Gardening who ensure we have well maintained outdoor space with beautiful hanging baskets and plants. In addition to this, our new CourtyardTwelve48 area has two pizza
ovens and two Kamado Joe barbeques, both of which were bought from our village garden centre in Birstall. Supporting local businesses not only supports growing ventures, built also reduces our carbon footprint as there is shorter distance to travel for delivery/collection.

About Staff at The White Horse

At the White Horse, we have an incredible team of 35, which has a close-knit family feel. A lot of our restaurant and bar staff are recruited through current staff siblings or family friends; this is a demonstration of us as employers as our staff recommend us as a workplace. As for kitchen staff and supervisors, our recruitment is naturally more rigorous as certain skills are requires, but we
do pride ourselves on the fact that three of our current supervisors started off as pot-washes and bar staff and have worked their way up through the business to supervisor level. Staff development is something that we massively prioritise, especially as a lot of our staff members start with us at 16, so it is their first job. For this reason, we know how incredibly important staff training is. On employment, staff receive a training booklet along with in-person training including points   of service and correct health and safety conduct. Our coffee supplier is St. Martins of Leicester, and they offer us coffee training as part of our partnership with them, so all staff get the opportunity to be coffee trained properly. This is super important as being based near a popular dog walking spot, we make a lot of coffees!

We like to think we treat our staff well. As well as receiving staff discounts, they also get two staff parties a year, plus an annual Alton Towers trip. As much as this is a way for us to say ‘thank you’ to our team, these regular staff dos allow the staff something to look forward to, and as they all get on so well, it is a fabulous social occasion! In recent years, we have challenged our staff to do both a sky dive and the Three Peaks Challenge for charity.

The wellbeing of our staff is incredibly important to us, we have such a strong family feel to our business, and knowing our staff well is pivotal to this. We know our team on an individual level and look out for them when things get challenging or celebrate them when they succeed. In addition to this, we are very flexible with staff shifts and availability as we are aware that a lot of our staff are also contending with college, university, and other commitments, so it is our aim to allow them to balance these as much as possible.

About Charity Work at The White Horse

Our largest community engagement is our annual Duck Race. Since our opening in 2009, our Duck race has raised over £115,000 for local causes and charities. This event was an annual fundraiser locally, many years ago and after we took on the pub it was something we wanted to return to our community. Every year we elect a local charity or cause that the duck sponsors will go towards and on the day (its always May Day!), our car park is full of stalls from other charities and local businesses who provide tombolas, cake stalls, games and face painting. This allows multiple different organisations to have the chance to raise money, and gives them a chance to promote themselves. People can come down to us free of charge to watch the actual duck race and nosey round the stalls, whilst our staff beaver away behind the bar and our kitchen team hold a barbeque. It has continued every year since (except in 2020 due to Covid restrictions). The Duck Race has supported some amazing and deserving charities and causes such as: Birstall United Football Club, GirlGuiding Leicester, Pay It Forward Community Group, school PTAs and the Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre. The charity Duck Race on Mayday raised money for Birstall Scouts.
