Three Horseshoes

About Three Horseshoes

We see The Three Horseshoes as being a vibey and friendly pub that does very good food. We are quirky and different in how we like the pub to look. Our wonderful customers have really embraced that. We think a pub with happy staff and a happy atmosphere rubs off on the customers and that is what a pub should be about to create that perfect environment, which in turn ensures all our customers have the best experience which is of course crucial to succeeding at a tough time for the industry.

We like to be quirky with our taste, ranging from décor, to artwork, lighting, the music we play right through to the events we hold, the food on our menu, the drinks we sell, the live music events we host and much more. We always like to be very original and not regurgitate the same things that a lot of pubs do. There are only so many things you can offer in a pub, but we will always look to be original and give our guests an experience every time they visit us.

To us all pubs in our town are great and serve a crucial role in the development of the community. However Tommy and myself said from the outset that we would be different and do everything our way, rather than conform and replicate what other pubs do. We have become very well known as a pub that welcomes everyone, has a wide ranging demographic, creates a very safe and welcoming environment for all, gets very involved with all aspects of community life, raises awareness for local businesses, works with and sponsors local sports teams, because they are also crucial to a community from a health and well being point of view as well as many other benefits and also we have synonymous as pub that will organise and host charity events which make a massive difference to peoples lives. All things to us are what makes us feel good in our opinion is what running a pub is all about!!

About the Local Community

We support a number of local sports teams in a variety of ways ranging from sponsorship, hosting mid season and end of season events, sponsoring individuals, running stands at their events to promoting awareness of these clubs within the local community. These clubs and individuals include Witney Town FC, Tower Hill FC, Clanfield FC, Oxford Utd, Witney Vikings FC, Aston FC, Witney Hockey Club, Oxford Rising Stars Ice Hockey team, Witney Mills Cricket Club, ex Ipswich Town footballers Matt Holland and Marcus Stewart and two local primary schools.

We have also hosted a very wide variety of community groups ranging from a book reading club, to music groups. We host local community groups committee meetings and AGM’s. We have hosted a wreath making community group. We have been talking with a mental health charity to start hosting monthly meetings for men who are struggling. We have hosted our local food bank and organised BBQ’s for their volunteers as thank you for all they do in the community. We hold networking sessions for local community organisations. We have even hosted lunches for the Oxford Utd Community Foundation. These kind of events are crucial to our business model and also vital to these organisation as it gives them a welcoming venue to host these events.

One event where we feel we went above and beyond will always stand out. One of our regulars is very sadly battling cancer, which is now terminal. In Sep 2024, Pauline and her husband Adrian decided to renew their wedding vows. They asked to do it at the pub and we were honoured. We knew it was going to be a very emotional both from the point of view of it being 20 years married and of course because everyone knew how unwell Pauline was. Tommy (my business partner) and myself decided to make it very different. We both got ordained as priests by some dodgy American organisation and we presided over their renewal. We wrote the hymns, the prayers and the speeches which we thought were very funny. We wanted to give the day a fun element and give Pauline and Adrian a lot to smile about, ensuring it wasn’t all sad for them. It was the most magical, funny and emotional day ever. We feel this kind of thing just doesn’t really happen in pubs, but that’s what we like to do. A pub needs to be there for it’s customers whenever needed.

About Local Businesses

We buy locally wherever possible. That is very important to us as it keep the economy within our town buoyant. We support a wide variety of local businesses with events they hold. We offer discount cards to local businesses and owners. We also do special collaborations with certain local businesses to create a real long term partnership. We work with local taxi firms to ensure customers can get home safely. We promote local trades people on boards within the pub. We actively promote events for local businesses, even local pubs. We think it is so important to be totally community focused and work together as one.

As mentioned above working with and buying from local suppliers is hugely important to us. We will always buy locally unless it is physically not possible. A number of these suppliers eat and drink at our pub. We actively promote each other businesses. We support events they hold. If we were to close the impact would be huge both financially and from a community standpoint. The loss would make a big hole in our local community.

About Staff at Three Horseshoes

Our staff are genuinely everything to us. Without them we would never be able to achieve any of our visions. We respect them all hugely and treat them as a family. We still have around 70% of the staff we had when we opened in 2023. We take them on nights out, we operate an open doors policy at all times, so they know they can talk to us about anything, we offer ongoing training (both in-house and externally), we offer apprenticeships, we put staff for individual awards, we take staff to awards and events that we as owners are invited to, as a thank you to them. When times occur where one of the team is having a tough time, we offer the support they need and time off. We will always do anything in our power to ensure they are happy, looked after and feel safe and welcome in their job every day.

About Charity Work at Three Horseshoes

When we opened in 2023, charity work was right at the top of our agenda. We feel that pubs have a duty to give back wherever they can (within their means of course). On top of us wanting to be very active within the heart of community, we wanted raising crucial funds for charity to work right alongside that. Our local community are very good at coming together for charitable events and supporting them brilliantly. We started small and as we developed our model and business, so did our ambitions. We have a held a whole range of charity events ranging from wreath making events, to an OktoberFest event, to a Steak night, auctions, raffles, right through to black tie dinners, events with high profile sporting icons, to a massive legends charity football tournament.
