Energy Cost Calculator

Last Updated:

The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) has created an Energy Cost Calculator
to help you compare energy prices when looking at kWh and standing charge rates.

With the recent changes to energy prices, many people are now looking for new agreements to help save money on energy costs. However, it is not always straight forward to determine which deal provides the best value for your needs.

Maybe you are confused about whether to go for a higher standing charge or the higher kWh rates.
If you have your estimated annual usage, these cost calculators should help you to quickly and easily compare energy prices from different providers to make sure you consider the best deals.

Before you start:
Prepare the details for the options you want to compare – you will need slightly different usage information for the Electricity & Gas Calculators – please see the instructions below for the figures you will need.

How to Use The Electricity Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the number of kWh per year you expect to use into the top box. If unsure, you can enter an estimate for now.
  2. Enter the Standing Charge per day and the Price Per kWh into the boxes for each of the options you want to compare. Please note that your Standing Charge figure is in pounds (£) and the kWh rate is in pence.
  3. You can compare up to 3 options at a time. If you want to compare more, you can delete the least attractive option of the 3 and replace it with a new quote.

  2. Calorific Value is the amount of energy stored in gas. You do not need to change the default amount of 39.5 unless you know the specific calorific value from your provider.
  3. Enter the Standing Charge per day and the Price per kWh into the boxes for each of the options you want to compare. Please note that your Standing Charge figure is in pounds (£) and the kWh rate is in pence.
