The BII Pre-Entry Awareness Training (PEAT) e-Learning course has been designed for prospective tenants/lessees who are considering signing a pub tenancy or lease agreement in England and Wales or Scotland. The course will provide you with the knowledge you need to evaluate the agreement you are considering.
The BII Pre-Entry Awareness Training (PEAT) e-Learning course is a comprehensive online program designed to provide prospective pub tenants and lessees in England, Wales, and Scotland with essential information and knowledge about the pub industry.
Taking this course will give learners the knowledge they need to evaluate the agreement they are considering, prepare for an interview and subsequent meetings with their chosen pub company and identify both the questions they need to ask and the professional advice they need to seek to enable them to make informed commercial decisions.
In 2016, the government introduced the Statutory Pubs Code which applies to all pub companies in England and Wales who own more than 500 tied pubs. The Code sets out a requirement for all prospective tenants to undertake Pre-Entry Awareness Training so that they fully understand the implications of leased and tenanted pub agreements. The majority of pub owning companies with less than 500 tied pubs also subscribe to the England & Wales Tenanted and Leased Codes of Practice, supervised by the Pub Governing Body and Pre-entry Awareness Training is compulsory under these codes.
In Scotland, the Pub Sector Scotland Code of Practice came into effect in 2016. The Code replaced the UK Industry Framework Code version 6 and any previous individual company codes. The Code is supervised by the Pub Governing Body. The Code sets out a requirement that all prospective tenants undertake Pre-Entry Awareness Training so that they fully understand the implications of leased and tenanted pub agreements.
This online course consists of 8 modules, covering a wide range of topics.
Provides an overview of the UK pub industry, covering different types of pubs and current trends.
Explores various types of agreements used in the pub industry, such as leasehold, tenancy, managed, and franchising.
Explains what a tie is, its benefits and drawbacks, and how to negotiate tie terms.
Discusses the condition of the premises at the start of an agreement, responsibilities for repairs and maintenance, and insurance requirements.
This course will look to cover rent structure, calculation, reviews, arrears, and penalties.
Guides participants in creating a business plan for a pub, including market research, analysis, and financial projections.
Outlines the types of support offered by pub companies, such as training, development, marketing, and promotional assistance.
Provides information on the next steps after completing the training, including finding a pub opportunity, applying for a license, and financing the business.
This online training course will take about 2 hours to complete.
We recommend you complete this course on a laptop or desktop computer in order to minimise compatibility issues accessing the online content of the course.
The questions for the training will be given in a multiple choice question format. You will be able to download your certificate immediately after completing this course.
Please DO NOT register with a generic business email address as you may not be able to access your certificate in the future.
